Andy Kinnaird
Andy Kinnaird is a seasoned Yachtmaster Ocean Instructor, captain, and yacht surveyor whose
career spans more than 25 years at sea. His journey began on the bow of a Volvo 60, competing in
RORC and JOG offshore races, before taking him on long-distance deliveries across the UK,
Mediterranean, Caribbean, and as far afield as Nova Scotia.
After earning his RYA Yachtmaster, Andy transitioned from racing and passage-making into
education, becoming an RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Instructor in 2004. This marked a turning point,
allowing him to combine hands-on seamanship with structured teaching, guiding sailors from basic
skills to advanced offshore navigation.
Over the years, he has built a reputation for calm, structured
instruction and confidence-building mentorship, helping crews and owners navigate both technical
challenges and the unpredictable demands of life at sea.
Andy’s leadership at sea expanded further when he skippered a 70ft expedition ketch for three
years, mastering heavy-weather handling, remote cruising operations, and complex system
management.
Later, as Captain of the 90ft luxury charter yacht MY Songbird, he honed his expertise in advanced onboard systems, crew development, and guest experience across the
Mediterranean and Caribbean.
Today, based in the Solent, Andy combines his practical sailing skills with technical knowledge as
an RYA instructor, surveyor, and bluewater consultant, delivering bespoke training,
ocean-preparation services, and yacht inspections worldwide.
Fully insured and actively sailing, he
remains committed to advancing seamanship, safety, and the joy of being at sea.
